Viking Women fall short against Jamestown Saturday

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women were paced by a 19-point performance from Ashlyn Diemert but it wasn't enough as rival University of Jamestown outlasted a late VCSU surge to take a 68-58 win Saturday at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
 
Jamestown led the Vikings 36-30 at halftime, when the game was interrupted by a 50-minute power outage just before the second half.
 
VCSU drops to 6-7 on the season. The Viking women are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Dakota Wesleyan University. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bubble.
 
The Vikings started strong Saturday and outscored the Jimmies 23-14 in the opening frame. Jamestown's Kia Tower paced the Jimmies to a 22-7 run in the second quarter with 10 points to build a 36-30 halftime lead. The game was interrupted by a 33-minute power outage just before the second half.
 
After a 20-minute warm-up prior to resuming play, VCSU closed the gap to trail by just a pair at 40-38 on a bucket from Adriana Torres with 5:28 on the clock. Jamestown found a 19-2 run to finish the period and lead 59-40 with one quarter to play.
 
The Vikings made a late rally, outscoring the Jimmies 18-9 in the final frame – including 11 points from Diemert – but fell short down the stretch.
 
VCSU shot 42 percent in the game (27-65), 25 percent on 3-pointers (5-20) and 82 percent on free throws (9-11). Jamestown shot 35 percent on field goals (24-68), 31 percent on 3's (7-22) and 50 percent from the free throw line (3-6).
 
Jamestown held a 50-35 rebounding advantage, including 15 on the offensive glass. VCSU totaled 15 assists and 14 turnovers, and Jamestown finished with nine assists and 15 turnovers in the game.
 
Diemert tied a season-high 19 points Saturday and led all scorers in the game. Torres and Ellie Braaten each scored 11 points, and Ellie Powell added eight. Torres dished a team-high five assists in the game, and Hailey Roberts led the Vikings with seven rebounds Saturday.
 
Jamestown's Kate Cordes led the Jimmies with 18 points while Audrey Rodakowski added 16 and Tower chipped in 13.
