Viking women fall to Dakota Wesleyan, 86-55

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Valley City State women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game on the road to Dakota Wesleyan Sunday afternoon, 86-55.
 
A total of 12 Vikings scored in the team effort Sunday, led by 10 points from Ashlyn Diemert. VCSU falls to 2-2 overall and Dakota Wesleyan opens the season 1-0.
 
The Tigers shot 44 percent in the first half (17-39) and finished shooting 40 percent in the game (31-77) as they never trailed Sunday. Dakota Wesleyan also shot 40 percent on 3's (10-25) and 70 percent from the free throw line (14-20).
 
Dakota Wesleyan totaled 36 paint points and added 31 points off of 27 Viking turnovers to help the win at home. The Tigers held a 53-43 rebounding advantage including 19 on the offensive glass contributing to 19 second chance points.
 
VCSU shot 30 percent on field goals (18-61), 36 percent from 3-point range (9-25) and 56 percent on free throws (10-18).
 
Adriana Torres and Ellie Braaten each finished with nine points and two assists for the Vikings. Ellie Powell led the rebounding effort with eight boards, while Allie Negen and Rosie Anderson each pulled down four. Elyse Hebrink tallied a team-best three steals and scored four points for VCSU.
 
Dakota Wesleyan's Emma Yost scored 22 points to lead four Tigers in double figure scoring Sunday. Isabel Ihnen and Lacey Sprakel each pulled down six rebounds, and Morgan Edelman totaled four steals for the Tigers.
 
UP NEXT: VCSU's women play an exhibition game Saturday at St. Cloud State University. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
