FOREST CITY, IOWA – The Valley City State volleyball team has secured a No. 2 seed for the NSAA Postseason with a 3-0 sweep over Waldorf Friday night, 25-23, 25-12 and 25-19.
VCSU seniors
Bailey Nelson and
Mardi Scutchings combined for 25 kills in the win. VCSU improves to 22-7 overall and 8-3 in the NSAA with one conference game remaining against conference-leader Viterbo. Waldorf drops to 11-14 on the season and 0-11 in conference play.
Waldorf started out strong on its home court, opening up with an 8-0 lead to hold a comfortable advantage early in the match. VCSU still trailed 21-16 in the opening set when an
Emma Lucas kill sparked a 9-2 Viking rally to take the win, 25-23.
From there, VCSU used a run of eight straight points midway through the second set – including a pair of blocks from
Mardi Scutchings and
Danielle Hagler – to pull away and win set two, 25-12.
The Vikings held onto the momentum and built a 22-13 lead in the final set. Waldorf would attempt the comeback with a 6-2 run including a service ace by Reinya Balderson, but the Vikings put away the match on a final kill from Scutchings.
The Vikings posted 52 kills while hitting .245 to Waldorf's 27 kills on a .066 attack percentage. VCSU's seniors led the way with Nelson posting 13 kills and Scutchings tallying 12.
Sadie Hansen posted a double-double of 38 set assists and 13 digs Friday. She was also perfect in attacks, tallying eight kills in as many attempts without a single error.
Delani Clarke led VCSU with 16 digs, while
JayCee Richter totaled 15 and
Reagan Bogenreif added 13.
Danielle Hagler posted a career-high eight blocks on the night and Scutchings chipped in a season-high six blocks on the night.
Waldorf's Kenzie Kidd tallied 11 kills Friday while Kaylee Kidd led the defense with 16 digs. Emma Hovenga totaled 20 set assists for the Warriors.
