VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women's basketball team fell 92-58 to No. 16 Dakota State Friday night in Valley City at the 4
th annual Dakota Clash.
Dakota State's full court pressure helped the Trojans to 21 steals and 35 points off turnovers in the win. Four Trojans scored in double figures, paced by Savannah Walsdorf and Cierra Watkins who each posted 19 points Friday. Dakota State improves to 5-2 on the season while Valley City State drops to 3-3 overall.
The Vikings started strong Friday with the help of three 3-pointers in the first quarter, but Dakota State pulled away in the second quarter after shooting 53 percent and going 11-for-12 on free throws in the frame.
The Vikings shot 41 percent from the field (24-59) but it wasn't enough as the Trojans shot 46 percent overall (31-68). VCSU also shot 41 percent on 3's (7-17) and 43 percent from the free throw line (3-7). Dakota State shot 25 percent on 3-pointers (8-32) and 71 percent on free throws (22-31). VCSU held a 40-37 rebounding advantage, including 11 on the offensive glass but only converted to two second chance points.
Ashlyn Diemert paced three Vikings in double-figure scoring with 14 points.
Katie Johnson added 11 points and
Adriana Torres added 10 points and five rebounds in the game.
Ellie Powell grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and
Ellie Braaten tallied three steals for VCSU.
Also scoring in double figures for Dakota State included Morgan Huber with 15 points and Tabor Teel who scored 12. Walsdorf added five rebounds and four steals while Teel grabbed a game-best eight rebounds. Lilli Mackley chipped in seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots for Dakota State.
Both teams are back in action Saturday at the Dakota Clash in Valley City. Dakota State faces Mayville State at 3 p.m. and VCSU takes on Dickinson State at 5 p.m.
