VCSU Volleyball takes 3-0 win over Dakota State

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team tallied 50 kills as a team while holding Dakota State to just 35 kills as the Vikings finished with a 3-0 sweep Friday night at home.
 
Morgan Freije led the offense with 11 kills while also posting a team-best three blocks Friday night. VCSU defeated Dakota State by final set scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-13.
 
VCSU improves to 21-6 on the season and 7-2 in conference play. Dakota State drops to 13-14 overall and 4-6 in the North Star.
 
The Vikings round out its home schedule Saturday against No. 20 Bellevue. VCSU will also recognize its two seniors before Saturday's game which is slated for an 11 a.m. first serve.
 
Valley City State opened Friday's match with a 20-12 advantage in the first set on a solo block by Freije, but Dakota State took a 9-2 run to close the gap and trail by just a point. VCSU found back-to-back points from senior Mardi Scutchings to bring up set point. Dakota State's Madalyn Groft held the Vikings off but Bailey Nelson's kill put the set away 25-22.
 
From there, it was all Valley City State. The Vikings built another 20-12 lead with the help of back-to-back kills from Freije. This time, VCSU wouldn't allow the Trojans to make a run and finished the set 25-16 on a Scutchings kill.
 
The Vikings kept the momentum into the final set, holding the Trojans to hitting just .044 percent. VCSU pounded 16 kills and forced six Dakota State attack errors to help the Vikings build an 18-3 lead en route to a 25-13 win in set three.
 
Sadie Hansen recorded a double-double of 41 assists and 13 digs to help the Vikings to the sweep over Dakota State Friday night. Bailey Nelson posted 10 kills in the match and Danielle Hagler chipped in eight kills and two blocks for VCSU.
 
 JayCee Richter paced five Vikings in double-figure digs with 17, while Reagan Bogenreif added 14. Delani Clarke recorded 12 digs and a game-high three service aces while Ellie Rush added 10 digs and a service ace in the win.
 
Dakota State's Maddie Langerock and Sydney Schell each recorded a double-double Friday night. Langerock recorded 22 set assists and 14 digs while Schell finished with 10 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Evans totaled a game-best six blocks and Kate VanRooyan led all players with 22 digs for the Trojans.
 
UP NEXT: VCSU hosts No. 20 Bellevue at 11 a.m. Saturday for Senior Day.
Dakota State travels to Dickinson State on Saturday for a 12 p.m. matchup.
