MAYVILLE – Mayville State snapped Valley City State's five-game win streak Wednesday as the Comets took a 3-0 victory on its home court, 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24.
Mayville hit a season-high .275 as a team and tied a season-best eight service aces to improve to 13-7 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.
Valley City State had won 14 straight sets prior to Wednesday's game and now drops to 19-5 overall and 6-2 in the North Star. It is the first time this season that VCSU has been swept by an unranked opponent, only falling in straight sets to No. 5 Northwestern and No. 6 Viterbo.
The Vikings and Comets kept it close in the first set with neither team leading by more than two points until a Mayville kill by Nicole Kortan sparked a four-point run to build a 21-18 lead. The Vikings held it within a point on a
Danielle Hagler kill to trail 22-21, but Mayville took three of the last four points to win the first set 25-22.
VSCU then built a 19-16 advantage in the second set with the help of a 6-2 run capped by an
Emma Lucas kill. Mayville responded with a 7-1 rally, allowing just a service error in the run. After a VCSU timeout, kills from Hagler and
Bailey Nelson helped the Vikings stay alive but the Comets took the set 25-22 on a block from Samantha Passa and Madison McKinnon.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, VCSU wouldn't go down without a fight and opened the third set with five straight points including a service ace from
Sadie Hansen. The Vikings maintained control and expanded its lead to 19-15 on a
Morgan Freije kill. Mayville took a timeout and managed to come back to tie the set at 21-21. VCSU halted a match-point opportunity with block by Freije and Scutchings, but an Elora Passa kill followed by a Kortan and Thyra Peterick block gave Mayville the final set, 26-24.
