Vikings fall 1-0 to Waldorf in NSAA Tournament opener

FOREST CITY, IOWA – The Valley City State baseball team dropped a close 1-0 pitcher's duel against Waldorf University Friday in the opening round of the NSAA Baseball Postseason Tournament.

William Hlady tossed seven shutout innings, only allowing a run to score in the bottom of the eighth. He gave up just four hits and struck out four batters in the game.

Valley City State is now 21-21 on the season and will play a loser's out game against No. 8 Presentation College (5-43) on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Warriors put two runners on base in the eighth inning after an Anthony Hibl single followed by James Hook being hit by a pitch. Denney advanced the runners with a sac bunt and Josh Fussy drove in a run with an RBI single to left field.

The Vikings had four hits in the game – all singles – from Dustin Mertz, David Demeter, Drew Nixon and Jayden Shipman. After Hlady's 7 and 1/3 innings of work, Zach Veneman pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief and struck out one.

Waldorf's pitcher Sam Jones tossed the complete game shutout and struck out 14 batters in the game. Waldorf also had four hits Thursday, including the game-winning RBI single from Fussy. Also tallying singles Thursday were Hook, Hibl and Thomas Capllonch.
