VCSU Baseball goes 1-3 against Midland

The Valley City State baseball team dropped both sides of a doubleheader Sunday evening, falling 10-6 and 14-3 to Midland University.

The Vikings finished the four-game series against Midland with a 1-3 record. The games were played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

VCSU is now 7-8 overall this season. Midland University moves to 13-2.

Up next: VCSU flies to Tucson, Ariz., for seven games from March 16-21.

Midland 10, VCSU 6
The teams traded leads several times in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The Vikings held leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 6-5, but each time Midland answered back en route to the 10-6 victory. 

VCSU finished with six runs on five hits. Midland scored its 10 runs on 11 hits. The Vikings committed three errors that led to four unearned runs.

William Hlady pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Vikings, allowing nine hits and nine runs – five of the runs were earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Zach Veneman pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief.

Five different Vikings all had one hit each. Jaden Babiuk had a 2-run double that scored two runs in the second inning. David Demeter was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and two walks. Chase Feller went 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two walks. Sal Avila had an RBI double and Jayden Shipman singled for VCSU's fifth hit.

Midland 14, VCSU 3
The Vikings had nine hits in the final game of the series, but could not keep pace with Midland which put up 14 runs.

David Demeter and Drew Nixon each had two hits and a run, while Dustin Mertz, Jaden Babiuk, Judson Seliskar, Jayden Shipman and Zach Veneman each had one hit.

Five different Vikings pitched in the series finale. Freshman Hunter Magnuson made his first career start, allowing five hits and six runs over 1 1/3 innings. Mitch Tayler pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and two runs. Jace Hanson, Wes Johnson and Christian Ramirez all pitched in relief as well.
