Viking Softball picks up big wins Saturday at PC Dome

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State softball team finished its weekend sweep with a pair of wins over Dakota Wesleyan and Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday. The Vikings finish the weekend with a 4-0 record at the Presentation College Dome.

The Vikings defeated Dakota Wesleyan in a 5-inning game decided by run rule. VCSU smashed 18 hits and scored in each of the five innings to take a 13-1 victory. The Vikings then shut out NCAA Div. II school Minnesota State University Moorhead 5-0.

VCSU improves to 7-5 on the season. Dakota Wesleyan drops to 3-7 overall and MSU-Moorhead falls to 1-3 this season.

UP NEXT: VCSU will travel for its spring trip to play 11 games in Tucson, Ariz. from March 9-16.

VCSU 13, Dakota Wesleyan 1 (5 innings)
Valley City State powered 18 hits and three home runs in a 13-1 win over Dakota Wesleyan in the first game of the day. Starting pitcher Joelle Lamontagne only allowed a solo home run and picked up her third win of the season. She scattered just four hits, no walks, and struck out three batters Saturday.

The Vikings got on the board early with three runs in the first inning including a two-run double from Sierra Crocker. Anne-Elise Gest then scored Riley Perryman with an RBI double in the second inning.

Back-to-back homers from Jessica Husband and Michelle Krahn highlighted a five-run third inning, and a Perryman RBI single added a run in the fourth. A solo home run from Gest and a Krahn RBI single rounded out the scoring for VCSU.

Husband went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Krahn went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Perryman went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Gest and Crocker each added two hits, two runs and three RBIs. 

VCSU 5, MSU-Moorhead 0
VCSU pitchers Brooke Gaudry and Joelle Lamontagne combined for a shutout of MSU-Moorhead in the second game of the day.

Sierra Crocker drove in two runs with a double to right field in the first inning to gain an early lead. The Vikings then scored three more runs in the fourth including an RBI from Riley Perryman and Joelle Aiello's two-run single.

Andrea Rodriguez went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a run for the Vikings Saturday. Husband, Perryman, Marissa Hawkins and Alyssa DePoorter each scored a run while Crocker and Aiello drove in two runs each.

Gaudry picked up the win after starting in the circle and working 4.1 innings. She allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out two. Lamontagne also pitched 2.2 innings in relief. She allowed one hit, walked three and struck out three.
