Jimmies use second half shooting to down Vikings

JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State women's basketball team dropped a nonconference contest to rival University of Jamestown Wednesday night after the Jimmies pulled away in the second half to lock in a 64-43 victory over the Vikings.

Jamestown shot 47 percent and outscored the Vikings 20-12 in the final 10 minutes of Wednesday's game. Jamestown is now 8-2 on the season while Valley City State drops to 8-3 overall. The Viking women will now have a break until they travel to Hilo, Hawaii for games on Dec. 18-19 at the Hoop and Surf Classic.

VCSU kept the game close early on, leading 9-8 with 2:01 on the clock in the first quarter. Jamestown's Hannah DeMars then scored six straight points to close out the period with a 14-9 lead. Allie Critchley's 3-pointer midway through the second quarter allowed VCSU to tie the game at 17-all. VCSU went on to trail UJ 28-24 at halftime.

The Jimmies picked it up coming out of the locker room, building upon their lead by outscoring the Vikings 16-7 in the third quarter – including 10 points from UJ's Audrey Rodakowski – to hold a 44-31 advantage with 10 minutes to play. Jamestown then shot 47 percent in the fourth quarter to help seal the 64-43 win.

Adriana Torres led the Vikings with 12 points and Allie Critchley chipped in eight points. Taryn Dieterle and Ashlyn Diemert each grabbed four rebounds while JayCee Richter added three rebounds and a blocked shot while Madison Wilhelmi tallied a pair of steals for VCSU.

VCSU shot 29 percent on field goals Wednesday (17-59), 27 percent on 3's (6-22) and 60 percent on free throws (3-5). Jamestown shot 39 percent in the game (26-67), 25 percent on 3-pointers (6-24) and 55 percent from the free throw line (6-11). Jamestown held a 51-34 rebounding advantage and tallied 15 second chance points.

Jamestown tallied 10 assists while turning the ball over 14 times and VCSU totaled seven assists with 18 turnovers in Wednesday's game.

UJ's Rodakowski scored 16 points while going 8-for-9 from the field Wednesday. Hannah DeMars and Kate Busek each grabbed eight rebounds and DeMars added four assists for the Jimmies.

UP NEXT: VCSU travels to the Hoop and Surf Classic in Hilo, Hawaii on Dec. 18-19. The Vikings face William Carey University on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. CT. VCSU will then take on No. 12 Morningside University on Monday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. CT.
