VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women's basketball team battled with the University of Jamestown Friday night at the Bubble but could not hold on after the Jimmies found a fourth quarter surge to defeat the Vikings 75-54.
Over the final 10 minutes, Jamestown shot 50 percent from the field and used a 20-3 run to pull away with the victory. The Jimmies improve to 11-2 overall while the Vikings drop to 8-6 on the season. VCSU remains 1-0 in the North Star and resumes conference play on Jan. 7 at Dakota State.
VCSU played an aggressive game against a fast-paced Jimmie team Friday night and held Jamestown to shooting just 32 percent through the first three quarters. The Vikings erased a 16-4 first quarter deficit with a 10-2 run, capped by a pair of JayCee Richter buckets, to trail 18-14 after the first 10 minutes.
The Vikings closed the gap to two points on a basket from Hailey Roberts at 24-22 with three minutes to go in the second quarter, but the Jimmies finished with a 7-2 run to hold a 33-25 lead at the break.
Out of the locker room, VCSU fought to gain on the Jimmies and Adriana Torres helped bring the Vikings within a point at 41-40 late in the third quarter. The Jimmies had the answer in the fourth quarter as Kia Tower hit back-to-back 3's and scored 11 points over the final 10 minutes to help power the Jamestown surge.
VCSU shot 34 percent from the field (21-61), 16 percent on 3's (3-19) and 53 percent from the free throw line (9-17). Jamestown shot 38 percent Friday (24-64), 46 percent from beyond the arc (10-22) and 74 percent on free throws (17-23).
Jamestown totaled 20 points off turnovers and 22 second chance points Friday. The Jimmies also held a 45-41 rebounding advantage and tallied 11 steals. VCSU posted nine points off turnovers and nine second chance points while totaling seven steals in the game.
JayCee Richter led the Vikings off the bench with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Adriana Torres chipped in nine points and grabbed nine rebounds while Hailey Roberts and Taryn Dieterle each scored seven points. Roberts dished a team-best three assists in the game.
Jamestown was led by Kia Tower and Hannah DeMars who combined for 43 points. Tower scored 24 while DeMars posted 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The pair dished three assists apiece and DeMars added a game-high three steals Friday.
UP NEXT: VCSU resumes conference play at Dakota State on Jan. 7. The women will tip at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
