Viking Volleyball falls to #7 Viterbo in four sets Friday

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team took No. 7 Viterbo to four sets Friday night in Graichen Gym but fell to the V-Hawks by final scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-15.

VCSU started strong, returning to its home court after six straight games on the road. VCSU took the first set 25-23, outhitting the V-Hawks .176 to .143. The Vikings built a 17-14 advantage on back-to-back kills from Bailey Nelson and held on down the stretch, putting away the set on another Nelson kill.

After opening the second set with a 6-0 Viking lead, Viterbo stormed back to a 17-13 advantage with the help of three Kenzie Winker kills. The Vikings couldn't hang on from there as Viterbo stepped up its momentum to take the next three sets.

Viterbo remains undefeated in conference play with a 12-0 NSAA record and improves to 25-6 overall. VCSU drops to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

Danielle Hagler led the Vikings with 13 kills Friday night, and Bailey Nelson chipped in nine kills. Sadie Hansen finished with 32 set assists and 19 digs while JayCee Richter posted a team-high 24 digs for the Vikings.

Viterbo had three players tally double figure kills in the match led by Kenzie Winker who totaled 19 kills and 11 digs Friday. Grace Rhode added 13 kills and Jada Mitchell chipped in 10 kills and a team-best five assisted blocks on the night.

Lauryn Sobasky totaled 32 set assists while Cailie Kowal collected 16 assist for the V-Hawks. Adrianna Reinhart posted a game-high 42 digs in the match.

UP NEXT: VCSU hosts Waldorf on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Graichen Gym. Viterbo now has a break until Friday, Nov. 4 when they travel to Dakota State.
