MAYVILLE – The Mayville State women's basketball team opened with seven 3-pointers in the first quarter to pull away from Valley City State Saturday, finishing with an 87-53 conference victory over the Vikings.
Mayville was too much for the Vikings Saturday, making 14 3-pointers, scoring 44 bench points, and tallying 17 assists as a team. The Comets also held the rebounding advantage 41-37 and added six blocks against VCSU.
Valley City State drops to 8-11 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. Mayville State improves to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the NSAA.
Mayville State's defense held the Vikings to shooting just 27 percent from the field Saturday (18-66) while shooting 53 percent from the field (33-62) at home. The Vikings shot 29 percent on 3-pointers (6-21) and 60 percent on free throws (11-16). Mayville State shot 45 percent on 3's (14-31) and 100 percent on free throws (7-7).
Allie Negen and Adriana Torres led VCSU's scorers off the bench Saturday as Negen scored 11 points and Torres chipped in 10. Negen and Torres each grabbed five rebounds for the Vikings.
Taryn Dieterle and Emma Nielsen each scored nine points and Dieterle pulled down a team-high seven rebounds Saturday. Allie Critchley dished out a team-best four assists for VCSU.
Mayville's Kylee Hurung led all scorers with 17 points while shooting 8-for-9 from the field. Jordan Zrust added 13 points and a pair of steals while Emma Passa grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and added three blocked shots for the Comets.
