VALLEY CITY – Mayville State University started the second half with 19 straight points Friday night, opening up a 32-point lead as the Comets defeated Valley City State University 62-33 in a shortened game. The game was called early midway through the fourth quarter due to a 60-minute power outage at VCSU's gymnasium.
Breanna Price scored the first bucket of the game for Valley City, but the Comets pulled ahead and finished the first quarter with a 15-6 advantage.
VCSU drops to 6-10 on the season and 3-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State improves to 12-4 on the season and 4-1 in the NSAA.
VCSU shot 25 percent from the field (11-43), 22 percent from beyond the arc (4-18) and 70 percent from the free throw line (7-10). Mayville State shot 47 percent from the field (27-57), 27 percent from beyond the arc (6-22) and went 2-for-3 on free throws.
Mayville's Jordan Zrust led all players with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Mackenzie Hughes added 14 points and Danneka Voegeli finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds. The Comets held the rebounding advantage 32-25 and forced 15 Viking turnovers.
The Vikings' offense was led by Ashlyn Diemert who made two 3's and finished with 10 points and 2 steals. Breanna Price added 6 points and 4 rebounds while Taryn Dieterle scored 4 and pulled down 5 rebounds.
With Mayville State leading 62-33 with 5:43 remaining in the game, the power suddenly went out at VCSU's W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse. The game was eventually called as final after the power did not return for 60 minutes.
