LA CROSSE, WIS. – Valley City State softball pitchers Amber Stewart and Emily Smith combined for 17 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Viterbo.
The Vikings took the first game 8-0 in a five-inning game with Stewart starting in the circle. Valley City State then took the second game 12-0 in just five innings again as Smith pitched her second no-hitter of the season.
VCSU improves to 19-5 overall and 12-2 in the NSAA. Viterbo drops to 5-25 overall this season and 5-9 in the conference.
Valley City State concludes the series at Viterbo on Sunday with a doubleheader at 12/2 p.m.
VCSU 8, Viterbo 0 (5 innings)
Amber Stewart gave up just one hit and tallied 10 strikeouts in the 8-0 shutout of the V-Hawks in game one.
Autumn Perry led the Vikings at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a scored run. Sierra Crocker was 2-for-4 and also drove in two runs and scored one. Jessica Husband added a home run for VCSU, while Crocker, Riley Perryman and Marissa Hawkins each recorded a double in the game. Perryman and Anne-Elise Gest each finished with an RBI for the Vikings.
VCSU 12, Viterbo 0 (5 innings)
Emily Smith tossed her second no-hitter of the season in a 12-0 shutout in game two. She walked two and struck out seven batters in the game.
Riley Perryman hit a grand slam in the first inning followed by a three-run blast from Makenzee Stone in the second inning as a part of a 10-run early rally. An RBI single from Anne-Elise Gest and an RBI sac-fly from Perryman rounded out the scoring for VCSU.
Stone, Sierra Crocker and Marissa Hawkins each went 2-for-3 at the plate and Jessica Husband went 2-for-2 with all four Vikings scoring two runs each. Perryman and Joelle Aiello each scored a run in the game.
