ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State volleyball team dropped a five-set effort to Presentation College in the regular season finale Saturday, 12-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-29 and 15-11.
Valley City State finishes the regular season with a 13-17 overall record and an 8-6 NSAA record. VCSU will be the No. 4 seed in the postseason after Saturday's loss. The Saints finish the regular season with a 15-13 overall record and a 5-9 record in the conference. Presentation clinched a spot in the postseason with Saturday's victory. The NSAA Tournament will be played Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.
Valley City State handily took the first set Saturday, forcing six Presentation errors early. VCSU took a 7-1 run to pull away and locked in the 25-12 victory on a Sadie Hansen kill.
Presentation then started to heat up and took the next two sets, both 25-22. The Vikings would not give up in the fourth set and held off the Saints on two set point opportunities with kills from Bailey Nelson and Makayla Wetzel. A Brooke Blessum kill set the Vikings up for a set point and a Presentation error gave VCSU the 29-27 victory to stay alive.
In the fifth set, Valley City State held an 8-8 tie with the Saints but couldn't hold on as Presentation finished with a 7-3 run to take the match.
Valley City State's Katie Juarez and Sadie Hansen each posted a double-double in Saturday's effort. Juarez tallied a team-high 29 digs and 10 kills while Hansen added 40 set assists and 21 digs in the match.
Kallene Klever added 21 digs for the Vikings and Bailey Nelson tallied a team-high 19 kills. Ella Roaldson chipped in a pair of solo blocks Saturday.
Presentation's Kerstin Knopik finished with 10 kills and four solo blocks to lead the Saints. Laura Babcock totaled a game-high 42 digs and Cassidy Keller added 13 digs. Olivia Corey tallied 24 set assists and 12 digs for Presentation.
UP NEXT: VCSU competes as a No. 4 seed in the NSAA Tournament. The two-day tournament is scheduled for Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.
