Viking women drop non-conference game to Jimmies Saturday

JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State women's basketball team fell to the University of Jamestown after the Jimmies sank 16 3-pointers to down the Vikings 91-68 Saturday.

The Vikings fall to 3-6 on the season while the Jimmies improve to 4-4 overall.

VCSU freshman Ashlyn Diemert poured in 19 points off the bench and went 8-for-11 from the field Saturday. She added four rebounds, a block and a steal in Saturday's game.

Adriana Torres added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Taryn Dieterle chipped in nine points and four rebounds for the Vikings. Emma Nielsen and Hailey Roberts each dished out four assists Saturday.

The Vikings held an early advantage Saturday, leading by as much as six points on a bucket from Bayli Heap in the middle of the first quarter. Jamestown finished the quarter on a 9-3 run to hold a 21-19 lead after the first ten minutes of the game. Jamestown started to pull away in the second quarter after hitting six 3's to hold a 44-29 advantage at the half.

Out of the locker room, Adriana Torres and Allie Negen combined for 15 points to close the gap to trail by just 10 in the middle of the third quarter, but that's as close as the Vikings could get the rest of the way.

VCSU shot 47 percent from the field Saturday (27-57), 28 percent on 3-pointers (7-25) and 39 percent on free throws (7-18). Jamestown shot 52 percent from the field (33-64), 44 percent on 3-pointers (16-36), and 75 percent from the free throw line (9-12).

Jamestown owned the rebounding effort 39-29, including 11 on the offensive glass. Jamestown also totaled 21 assists and six steals while VCSU recorded 13 assists and four steals Saturday.

Jamestown had four players score in double figures Saturday, led by Madelyn Schmidt who hit five 3-pointers for 15 points. She added three assists, three rebounds and a steal for the Jimmies. Hannah DeMars added 14 points, Kia Tower finished with 11 and Jailyn Martinson chipped in 10. Kate Busek finished with three steals for Jamestown.

UP NEXT: Valley City State travels to Minot State for an exhibition doubleheader on Monday. The women's game is at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
