Vikings dominate Comets in 3-0 sweep Wednesday night

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team swept Mayville State Wednesday night in dominating fashion, finishing with a season-best .297 hitting percentage and tallying 53 kills as a team. The Vikings took the conference match in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-16.

"I am very proud of our consistency all the way around, from our blocking and hitting to our serve receive," said head coach Brigitte Greywater. "It was really important that we were able to formulate a game plan and stick to it the whole way through. No one shook tonight."

It is VCSU's second 3-0 victory of the season, in addition to a non-conference sweep over Peru State back on Sept. 2. Valley City State improves to 7-13 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Mayville State drops to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the North Star.

VCSU's Bailey Nelson led the Viking offense Wednesday with 16 kills on a .448 attack percentage. It is her fourth game this season hitting above .400.

Junior Caitlyn Fischbach totaled 10 kills on a season-high .455 hitting percentage and senior Makayla Wetzel added 10 kills on a season-high .421 percentage. Brooke Blessum and Katie Juarez each added seven kills Wednesday while Blessum added five blocks (one solo, four assisted) for the Vikings.

Juarez also tallied a season-high 22 digs for the Viking defense while Kallene Klever finished with 16. Freshman Sadie Hansen contributed 45 set assists and 10 digs Wednesday.

Valley City State opened the conference matchup with an early 13-4 lead in the first set, including 11 Viking kills. VCSU never looked back as they dominated set one and totaled a .417 attack percentage as a team en route to a 25-14 victory.

The Comets kept the second set close but a pair of kills from Brooke Blessum down the stretch helped seal the set for the Vikings at 25-22. Mayville State couldn't recover as they committed nine errors in the final set. With a narrow 16-14 Viking advantage, VCSU then put away the set with a 9-2 rally to finish the sweep.

VCSU held the Comets to a .091 attack percentage and just 30 kills Wednesday night. Mayville's Elora Passa tallied 16 set assists and eight kills to lead the Comets.

Defensively, Natalie Hadrava totaled a team-high 22 digs while Ashley Pyburn tallied four blocks and Rian Richards added three for the Comets.
