Vikings unable to finish comeback; fall to Bruins 77-69

BELLEVUE, NEB. – The Valley City State men's basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to an end Saturday. The Vikings overcame a 21-point deficit late in the second half but couldn't finish the comeback as the Vikings fell to Bellevue, 77-69.

Valley City State falls to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Star Athletic Association. Bellevue improves to 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the NSAA.

The Vikings had three players score in double figures Saturday, led by Jalen Addison who scored 18 points, including three 3's and a perfect 5-for-5 on free throws. Kevin Schramm added a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while Hunter Sand contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings.

Valley City State opened with a 15-6 run Saturday to hold a large lead over Bellevue in the first seven minutes of play. The Bruins then closed out the first half with a 19-4 run to hold a 36-24 advantage at the buzzer.

The Bruins led by as much as 21 points after opening the second half with a 10-1 run. With 12:53 on the clock, a layup from Chris Thompson sparked a 12-0 run for the Vikings to get within six points. The Vikings continued to inch closer as Kevin Schramm's three-pointer tied the game at 59-59 with 5:52 to play. The Bruins scored the next six straight points and the Vikings would never recover as they fell to Bellevue, 77-69.

Valley City State shot 37 percent from the field (25-67), 37 percent on three-pointers (7-19), and 75 percent from the free throw line (12-16). Bellevue shot 45 percent from the field (29-65), 12 percent on three-pointers (2-17), and 65 percent on free throws (17-26).

The Bruins tallied 52 points in the paint and 21 fast break points Saturday while the Vikings totaled 30 points in the paint and just five fast break points. The Bruins also held the rebounding advantage, 44-39.

Jemeil King led the Bruins with 28 points and six rebounds. Lewis Hayes, Jaylen Wiltz, and Michael Wright also scored in double figures for Bellevue.

UP NEXT: The Vikings return home on Tuesday, Jan. 12, for a non-conference game against Oak Hills Christian College. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
