VCSU sweeps Presentation in non-conference game Friday

Valley City State took three straight sets from Presentation College in a non-conference matchup Friday night, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23.

Freshman Clarissa Hilary recorded her fifth-straight double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs in the victory.

Maara Nelson pounded a game-high 13 kills for the Vikings. Katie Juarez and Caitlyn Fischbach each tallied nine kills while Nissa Johnson added seven. Kallene Klever led the defensive side with a team-high 19 digs.

Valley City State is now 2-5 overall and remains 1-0 in conference play. Presentation falls to 2-2 overall this season.

The Vikings controlled most of the first set with the Saints taking their first lead of the game at 19-18. At 21-19 in favor of Presentation, a kill from Caitlyn Fischbach sent the Vikings on a 4-0 run to lead 23-21. A pair of Valley City State errors allowed the Saints to tie it up but kills from Fischbach and Bailey Nelson put it away for the Vikings, 25-23.

Looking to battle back, Presentation took their largest lead in set two at 9-4. Valley City State would score the next five straight to tie things up. Tied again at 20-20, the Vikings scored five of the next six points, including three kills from Maara Nelson, to take the set 25-21.

Valley City State never trailed in the third set, starting out with a 9-4 lead. Presentation would come back to tie at 12-12 but the Vikings took the next three points, capped by a kill from Fischbach. From there, the Saints would get back within two on a kill from Kayla Wolfe at 23-21. A kill from Maara Nelson set up the Viking match-point. Presentation took the next two points, but Fischbach finished it off with a final kill to take the set 25-23.
