Box Score HELENA, MONT. – The Valley City State women's basketball team opened play at the Carroll Thanksgiving Classic Friday, falling to nationally ranked (20)Carroll College, 69-32.
Valley City State falls to 1-2 this season. Carroll improves to 4-0 overall.
The Saints put up 24 more shots than the Vikings, and out rebounded the Vikings 55-31. Carroll added 18 points off of 19 Viking turnovers and scored 42 points in the paint.
The Saints were hot from the start, scoring the first eight points and holding the Vikings to just four points in the first quarter. The Vikings couldn't find their rhythm as the Saints had their biggest quarter of the game with 26 points in the second quarter and held a 44-13 advantage at the half.
The two were closely matched in the third quarter as the Vikings put up seven points and held the Saints to just nine points in the quarter. Valley City State couldn't catch up though, as they fell to Carroll College 69-32.
Allie Critchley tallied six points for the Vikings, and Dani Schwanke and Emma Nielsen each added five. Nielsen also added a pair of steals and five rebounds Friday, while Adriana Torres pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Valley City State shot 20 percent from the field (9-46), seven percent on three-pointers (1-14), and 57 percent from the free throw line (13-23). Carroll College shot 41 percent from the field (29-70), 17 percent on three-pointers (4-24), and 70 percent on free throws (7-10).
