Vikings drop season opener to Jamestown

JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State men's basketball team forced 23 Jamestown turnovers, but it wasn't enough to stop the Jimmie offense as Valley City State dropped the season opener Friday night, 94-69.

Jamestown improves to 3-0 overall. Valley City State falls to 0-1 this season.

Kevin Schramm started with the first five points of the game to set the Vikings out with an early lead. Then, trailing 14-10 with 12:27 left in the first half, a steal by Schramm led to a three pointer from Eddie Oyet to close the gap to just a point.

With 10:13 left in the first half, a basket from Schramm brought the Vikings within two at 20-18. From there, the Jimmies scored the next eight points to build a double-figure lead they would hold onto as they closed the half leading the Vikings 46-34.

The Vikings came out of the locker room keeping up with the Jimmies, each scoring seven points to open the half. With the Vikings trailing 53-41 and 16:23 left to play, Jamestown went on a 25-5 run over the next nine minutes, capped by a three pointer from Will Cordes. The Vikings couldn't come back as the Jimmies shot 68 percent in the second half and took the victory, 94-69.

Jamestown's Mason Walters scored a game-high 30 points on 11-for-13 shooting and going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line to pace the Jimmies. Also scoring in double figures for the Jimmies were Jack Talley (14), Devan Praska (13), and Brock Schrom (12).

Jamestown shot 63 percent overall (35-56), 47 percent on three pointers (9-19), and 83 percent from the line (15-18). The Jimmies also out-rebounded the Vikings 49-19.

Kevin Schramm finished with four three-pointers and totaled 20 points to lead the Viking offense. He also added four rebounds, three steals, and three assists for the Vikings. Chris Thompson added 18 points as the only other Viking to score in double figures.

Hunter Sand, Eddie Oyet, and Jalen Addison each added six points Friday. Sand also tallied a team-high four assists.

VCSU shot 38 percent in the game (28-73), 33 percent on three-pointers (11-33), and 67 percent from the free throw line (2-3).

UP NEXT: Valley City State travels to the NAIA Basketball Classic Nov. 7-8 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings are slated to play Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Mount Marty Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
