Vikings take five-set battle over Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Three Vikings tallied double figure kills in Valley City State's victory over Presentation College Saturday, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Sophomore Caitlyn Fischbach pounded a career-high 17 kills Saturday to propel the Viking offense. Bailey Nelson added 15 kills and Katie Juarez recorded 14 kills and 10 digs for the Vikings.

Freshman setter Clarissa Hilary added a double-double, tallying a career-high 52 set assists and 18 digs in the win. Kallene Klever contributed 24 digs, and Morganne Eppard tallied 17.

Valley City State improves to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the NSAA. Presentation falls to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Vikings started the battle early, holding onto a 10-10 tie in the first set on a block from Bailey Nelson and Nissa Johnson. From there, Presentation went on an 8-2 rally to take their biggest lead of the game at 18-12. Valley City State would get back within three at 23-20 but couldn't get closer as the Saints took set one, 25-20.

Valley City State continued their campaign, never trailing by more than four points in the second set. Trailing 16-12, a kill from Katie Juarez sparked an 8-4 Viking rally to tie things up at 20. After the Saints took the next two points, the Vikings took a timeout that proved effective as they scored the next two to tie it up at 22. A kill from Caitlyn Fischbach finished the second set in favor of the Vikings, 25-23.

Presentation controlled much of the third set, gaining 19-13 lead over the Vikings. The Saints held onto their six-point lead at 23-17 when a Clarissa Hilary kill sparked a five-point Viking rally to get within a point at 23-22. The Saints held on as they took set three, 25-22.

The fourth set remained close throughout as neither team led by more than four points during the set. Tied at 20, a Hilary service ace prompted a timeout from Presentation. Tied again at 22, a kill from Fischbach gave Valley City State the 23-22 advantage. A kill and an error from the Saints brought up set-point for the Vikings as Juarez finished with a kill to take the fourth set, 25-23.

Valley City State held onto their drive into the fifth set, leading 8-5 early and prompting a Saints timeout. The Vikings weren't fazed as they continued to gain on the Saints up to 12-8 on a kill from Fischbach. Presentation was able to get within a point on a Viking error at 13-12, but a Fishcbach kill paired with Saints error gave the Vikings the final set, 15-12.

Constence Rollins led the Saints with 13 kills while Kayla Wolfe added 12 Saturday. Laura Babcock tallied a game-high 27 digs and Kenzie Kuxhaus recorded 23 digs. Sidney Miller recorded 26 set assists while Rebecca allen tallied 20 assits Saturday.
