Box Score LA CROSSE, WIS. – The Valley City State men's basketball team ended its two-game road trip with a split this weekend after dropping Saturday's game at Viterbo University.
VCSU held a slight 38-36 lead at halftime, but the V-Hawks outscored the Vikings 40-25 in the second half to pull away on their home floor and win 76-63.
Valley City State drops to 5-13 overall and 2-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. The Vikings won the opening game of the road trip on Friday, securing a 91-79 victory at Waldorf University.
With the win Saturday, Viterbo University improves to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the NSAA.
The Vikings scored the first seven points of the second half, opening up a 45-36 lead on Logan Nelson's three-point play with 16:45 remaining. VCSU maintained the lead at 51-47 before Viterbo started its game-winning surge over the final 12 minutes. The V-Hawks went on a 8-0 run to take a 55-51 lead with 8:33 remaining, and later used a 12-3 run to put the game out of reach.
Kevin Schramm had 14 points and five rebounds to lead the Vikings on Saturday. Jalen Addison added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Chris Thompson, Nelson and Connor Enti all scored nine points, and Matthew Schlottman posted eight points off the bench.
VCSU shot 44 percent overall (25-57), 24 percent on 3's (5-21) and 53 percent at the line (8-15).
Viterbo's Tyree Young played all 40 minutes and posted a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds. Robert Cunitz added 15 points and Lowden Rockweiler finished with 14 points for Viterbo.
The V-Hawks shot 46 percent on their home floor (28-61), 28 percent on 3's (7-25) and 65 percent at the line (13-20).
Up next: Valley City State plays its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday night, hosting Trinity Bible College for a doubleheader. The women tip at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
