Viking Volleyball Goes 1-1 on First Day of Baker Invite

The Valley City State volleyball team opened the Baker Invite with a 3-0 sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University 25-19, 26-24, and 25-23.

In the second match of the day, Valley City State took No. 25 Ottawa University to a five-game battle but ultimately fell to the Braves 25-27, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, and 15-9.

The Vikings appeared to be evenly matched with the Braves as neither team led by more than four points through the first two sets. Ottawa University capitalized on seven Valley City State errors in the final set to take the win.

Valley City State is now 2-5 on the season. Haskell Indian Nations University falls to 4-5 and Ottawa University improves to 6-3.

UP NEXT: Valley City State plays two final matches at the Baker Invite Saturday. The Vikings face tournament host Baker University Saturday at 9 a.m. and Bethany College at 1 p.m.

Katie Juarez and Bailey Nelson each tallied nine kills while Ellie Winter added seven. Alexa Walby tallied 19 assists and Reagan Ingstad added 16. Senior Huschka led the defense for the Vikings, recording 17 digs while Kallene Klever added 10.

Valley City State 2, No. 25 Ottawa University 3
Senior libero Huschka recorded a team-high 33 digs Friday night. Morganne Eppard added 23 and Kallene Klever contributed 14 for Valley City State's defense. Juarez contributed a team-high 17 kills followed by Nelson who added 16. Ingstad tallied 26 assists and four aces in the match. Walby also contributed 26 assists for the Vikings.
