Valley City State drops conference finale at Dickinson State

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Valley City State volleyball team fell to Dickinson State in their season finale Friday night, 25-15, 27-25, and 25-18.

Valley City State trailed by only five points at 15-10 when Dickinson State scored the next six straight points in front of their home crowd. Dickinson State would lead by as much as 13 points in the first set to bring up 24-11 match point for the Blue Hawks. A block by Taylor Sargent and Nissa Johnson would allow the Vikings to gain a few more but ultimately dropped the first set 25-15.

Neither team led by more than three points in the second set as the NSAA teams battled back and forth. Valley City State tallied 20 kills in the set but couldn't hold on as Dickinson State scored the final three points for the win, 27-25.

The Vikings trailed early in the third set at 15-8 when a Makayla Wetzel kill sparked a 7-3 run to get within three points. The Blue Hawks answered back as they finished strong and took the final set 25-18.

Valley City State was led by Katie Juarez who tallied 14 kills while Caitlyn Fischbach added six kills and four blocks. Charlotte Huschka recorded a team-high 16 digs for the Vikings.

Reagan Ingstad added 18 assists and 10 digs while Alexa Walby added 15 assists.

Three Blue Hawks recorded double-digit digs in Friday night's matchup, led by Sarah Dobitz with 14 while Jenna Swope added 13, and Abby Moerkerke finished with 12. Dickinson State's offense was led by Cassie North with 13 kills while Kadara Marshall recorded eight kills and three blocks.

Keera Stookey tallied 17 assists while Karlie Cleveland added 15 for the Blue Hawks.

Valley City State finishes the season at 5-20 overall and 1-13 in the North Star. Dickinson State finishes the season at 8-15 overall and 3-11 in the conference.

Valley City State will not make the postseason tournament which begins Friday, Nov. 15.
