Box Score VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State men's basketball team fell to a 3-point barrage Friday night, dropping an 84-73 contest to Mount Marty College and its 15 made 3's.
The Vikings held a 39-38 halftime lead before Mount Marty took control by outscoring VCSU 46-34 in the second half. The Lancers made seven 3's in the first half and eight In the second half, finishing the game 15-for-33 from 3-point range.
Valley City State drops to 0-6 on the season, still looking for its first official win. The Vikings did defeat NCAA Division II Minot State in an exhibition game earlier this season.
Mount Marty College improves to 5-1 overall this season. The Lancers now have victories over four North Star Athletic Association teams, including VCSU, Waldorf University, Presentation College and Dakota State.
Ten different Vikings scored in the game, led by 13 points off the bench from Hunter Sand. Kevin Schramm posted 12 points and seven rebounds, while Connor Entzi scored 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Hunter McCalla added seven points and seven rebounds, and Chris Thompson and Jalen Addison each scored seven points.
Mount Marty wore down the Vikings with a 3-point barrage and full-court pressure defense, making 15 3's and forcing 19 Viking turnovers.
Valley City State shot 51 percent overall, going 16-for-29 in the first half and 29-for-57 in the game. The Vikings shot 30 percent from 3-point range (6-20) and 56 percent at the line (9-16). Mount Marty shot 43 percent from the field (26-60), 46 percent on 3's (15-33) and 74 percent at the line (17-23).
An entertaining first half featured 11 lead changes. After falling behind 21-17 with 11 minutes remaining, the Vikings took control with 13 straight points over the next 3:30. Four different Vikings scored during the run, which was capped by Chris Thompson's fast break basket that gave the Vikings their largest lead of the game at 30-21.
Mount Marty responded with an 11-3 run late in the first half to gain a 38-37 lead before VCSU's Logan Nelson sank two free throws with 3.5 seconds left to give the Vikings a 39-38 lead at the break.
The teams stayed close in the second half before Mount Marty pulled away over the final 11 minutes. Leading 60-58, the Lancers went on a 19-4 run over the next six minutes and built their largest lead of the game at 79-62.
Colby Johnson shot 6-for-7 from 3-point range as he led the Lancers with 27 points. Chris King added 18 points for Mount Marty.
