Box Score MAYVILLE – Valley City State dropped a conference road match to Mayville State in four sets Wednesday, 24-26, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-19.
Valley City State started out strong as they led most of the first set Wednesday night. With the score 23-19 in favor of the Vikings, the Comets made a 5-1 run to take their first lead of the game at 24-23. A Comet error and pair of Katie Juarez kills gave the Vikings set one, 26-24.
Mayville State built on their late momentum as they began set two with a 9-1 lead. The Comets only committed two errors in the second set and hit .333 percent as they took the set 25-11.
Set three featured 12 ties as the two teams battled for the win. The final tie came at 15-15 when a Victoria Johnson kill began a 8-2 run for the Comets. At 23-17, the Vikings would score on back-to-back Juarez kills. A Viking error then brought up set point for Mayville State at 24-19. The Vikings would score three straight but another Johnson kill secured the set for the Comets, 25-22.
The fourth set found the Vikings trailing early and working to catch up throughout the set. At 14-9 in favor of Mayville State, Reagan Ingstad scored on back-to-back service aces for the Vikings. From there, Valley City State couldn't build on to their momentum as they dropped the set to Mayville State, 25-19.
Katie Juarez led the Vikings with 14 kills, 11 digs, and three blocks Wednesday night. Charlotte Huschka tallied a team-high 21 digs and four service aces. Kallene Klever added 10 digs and an ace for the Vikings.
Alexa Walby recorded 24 assists for the Vikings while Reagan Ingstad tallied 17 assists and three aces.
Mayville State was led by Victoria Johnson who tallied 14 kills for the Comets, followed by Hannah Bliss with 13. Elora Passa recorded 41 assists for the Comets.
Jayden Warner tallied a team-high 37 digs Wednesday night while Amy Seim and Mason Hart each added 11.
Valley City State falls to 5-18 on the season and 1-11 in the conference. Mayville State improves to 18-11 on the season and 7-5 in the North Star.
