Vikings drop game at Minnesota-Morris

Five Vikings scored in double figures Sunday but it wasn't enough as the VCSU men's basketball team dropped a 75-65 road contest at Minnesota-Morris.

After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, the Vikings cut the lead to just two points at 44-42 early in the second half. Morris responded with quick 8-2 run to push the lead back up to eight points, and the Vikings would get no closer than six the rest of the way.

The Vikings drop to 2-6 overall this season. VCSU plays an exhibition game at Minot on Tuesday before opening conference play Saturday at Mayville State.

On Sunday, Valley City State shot 41 percent overall (25-61), 32 percent from 3-point range (10-31) and 5-for-9 on free throws. Logan Nelson led the Vikings with 17 points. Hunter McCalla had a strong all-around game with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Chris Morgan finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Alex Weston and Connor Entzi each had 10 points, and Weston added five assists. The Vikings recorded assists on 20 of their 25 baskets.

Noah Grove led Morris with 20 points, including 10 at the free-throw line. Jeffery Halverson added 16 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars shot 45 percent overall (26-58), 23 percent on 3's (6-26) and went 17-for-24 on free throws.

Up next: Valley City State plays a men's and women's doubleheader at Minot State on Tuesday night. Both games are exhibition contests for VCSU.
