Viking Men race past Oak Hills, 95-67

The Valley City State men's basketball team wrapped up the Crookston Classic with a big win on Sunday, pulling away in the second half of a 95-67 victory over Oak Hills Christian College.

Logan Nelson poured in 23 points to lead five Vikings in double figures. Valley City State led by two at halftime, 43-41, but stepped up the defense in the second half and outscored Oak Hills 52-26 over the final 20 minutes.

The Vikings are now 2-5 overall this season. VCSU also played Saturday at the Crookston Classic, dropping an exhibition game against Minnesota-Crookston, 84-54.

Valley City State shot 56 percent in Sunday's win over Oak Hills, going 36-for-64 from the field. Leading 43-41 at halftime, the Vikings opened the second half with an 11-0 run to take control and Oak Hills would get not closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Nelson and Michael Cornelious both notched double-doubles in the victory. Nelson made four 3-pointers and finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Cornelious posted 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in just 22 minutes on the floor.

Denzel Kennedy came off the bench for his best game of the year, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting. Christian Kvilvang (11 points) and Chris Morgan (10 points) both reached double figures, and freshman Ryan Sand had a career-high nine points off the bench.

The Vikings totaled 19 assists in the victory, led by five from Cornelious and four each by Kvilvang and Hunter McCalla. VCSU was 9-for-29 on 3-pointers and 14-for-19 at the free throw line.

Valley City State held a 53-20 rebounding advantage, including a 16-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The Vikings held Oak Hills to just 33 percent shooting in the second half.

Up next: Valley City State (2-5) is off until Sunday, Nov. 25, when they travel to Minnesota-Morris for a 2 p.m. game.
