Vikings start fast in 40-14 victory at Jamestown

Box Score

JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State and University of Jamestown football teams played 60 minutes on the clock Saturday in Jamestown, but the game was all but over after just six minutes.

The Vikings scored four touchdowns in the first six minutes as they built a 27-0 lead and never looked back, winning 40-14 in the 119th meeting with the Jimmies.

VCSU's special teams made the difference early, creating the Vikings first three touchdowns of the day. Louis Quinones returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to start the early onslaught. VCSU's punt team then blocked a Jamestown punt and Hunter Olson returned it for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Hunter Slemmons forced a fumble and Dominic Kruse recovered it, setting the Viking offense up on the Jimmie 32-yard line. Two plays later Quinones found the end zone from 24 yards out for a 20-0 lead.

The Viking defense forced a Jimmie three-and-out on the next possession, and VCSU's offense went 66 yards in three plays with quarterback Jalen Pfeifer rushing in a touchdown from 15 yards. Pfeifer's scramble capped the early onslaught, building an insurmountable 27-0 lead with 9:05 remaining in the first quarter.

Quinones added touchdown runs in the second and fourth quarters, giving him four total touchdowns on the day. He finished with 171 rushing yards on 22 carries and posted 314 all-purpose yards – just two yards shy of the school record 316 all-purpose yards held by Derek Elliott.

The Vikings now lead the all-time series with Jamestown, 62-52-5, and lead the Paint Bucket series 41-30.

The game was delayed 30 minutes as Jamestown's field crew worked to clear a few inches of snow off the field. The games opening kickoff came just after 1:30 p.m., and for VCSU it was worth the wait after Quinones took it back to the house and started the rout.

Kendrick Lenzen posted 12 tackles and a tackle for loss to lead the Viking defense. Riley Fredrickson and Jesus Munoz both had 10 tackles in the game. Austin Erickson had a sack and seven tackles, and Tyler Masat had a big day with six tackles, a sack, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Gavin Kolden had an interception for VCSU, one of three turnovers forced by the Vikings.

VCSU's offense had 381 total yards, including 281 on the ground. Quinones' 171 yards on the ground led the way. Anthony Logan picked up 77 yards and Pfeifer rushed for 43. Jamestown had 317 yards of total offense.

Pfeifer finished the day 9-for-19 passing for 100 yards. Jake Peterson caught four catches for 61 yards, while Eli Luna had four catches for 39 yards. Senior Nick Groth, playing his final game for VCSU, recorded his first career catch.

Valley City State ends the season with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in conference play. After starting the season 2-4, VCSU won three of its final four games to battle back to a .500 record. Jamestown drops to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
