The Valley City State volleyball team went the distance Tuesday night before falling in five sets to Concordia College-Moorhead.

The Vikings held a 2-1 lead on their home court, but Concordia rallied for the road non-conference victory by scores of 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-16, 16-14.

VCSU drops to 6-10 overall this season. It is the fifth time VCSU has lost in five sets this season, including an exhibition match at Concordia earlier this month. Concordia improves to 6-8 overall.

Clarissa Olson led the Vikings with 15 kills in the match and a sparkling .632 hitting percentage. VCSU hit .293 as a team, including a .526 hitting percentage in set three where they won 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Cobbers rallied back though and jumped out to a 13-3 lead in set four before coasting to a 25-16 win to even the match. The decisive fifth set was close throughout with eight ties and four lead changes. VCSU had one match point after going ahead 14-13, but Concordia took advantage of VCSU errors to score the final three points and win the set, 16-14.

Autumn Johnson and Taylor Sharp both added 10 kills for the Vikings. Taylor Balkan led VCSU with 30 assists, and Jaycee George tallied 15 digs.

Concordia narrowly outhit the Vikings, .296 to .293. VCSU had nine blocks to just three for the Cobbers. The Vikings tallied 12 aces but committed 11 service errors. Concordia had seven aces and four errors.

Mandy Mercil and Brianna Carney each had 15 kills for Concordia, and Jena Klaphake had 52 assists in the match.
