Viking women fall to #8 Jamestown

The Valley City State women's basketball team was held to a season-low 54 points Saturday as the Vikings dropped a 69-54 conference game to the University of Jamestown.

Jamestown led 16-12 after the first quarter and then took control for good by outscoring the Vikings 20-13 in the second quarter, building a 36-25 halftime lead. The Vikings pulled to within eight points at one point in the third quarter, but Jamestown responded with an 8-0 run to rebuild a commanding lead.

Valley City State drops to 13-9 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Jimmies – ranked No. 8 in the country – improve to 22-4 overall and 8-0 in the NSAA.

Senior forward Courtney Dixon led VCSU's attack on Saturday, going 3-for-5 on 3-pointers and finishing with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Lexi Lennon added 10 points, and Mackenzie Huber posted eight points and nine rebounds.

VCSU shot 36 percent from the field, including 30 percent in the second half, and was hampered by 20 turnovers in the game. The Vikings went 19-for-53 from the field, 4-for-15 from 3-point range and 12-for-14 at the free throw line.

Taylor Hammer matched her season-high with 23 points Saturday to lead Jamestown's offensive attack. Hammer went 3-for-5 on 3's and added six rebounds. Jessica Buck added 12 points and four rebounds for Jamestown.

The Jimmies shot 40 percent overall (19-47), 42 percent on 3's (10-24) and 66 percent at the free throw line (21-32). Jamestown outscored the Vikings 30-12 from behind the 3-point line, including an 18-3 edge in the first half.
