The Valley City State men's basketball team was held to a season-low 50 points Wednesday night as Mayville State upended the No. 17-ranked Vikings, 65-50.
VCSU held a 30-24 halftime lead, but the Comets outscored the Vikings 41-20 in the second half. The two teams were tied at 39-39 with 10 minutes remaining in the game before Mayville State broke the game wide open with a 20-2 over the next eight minutes.
Valley City State drops to 18-7 overall and 6-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State improves to 14-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
VCSU's previous season-low for points was 60 in a loss to Minnesota-Crookston back in November. The Vikings shot just 29 percent from the field (19-66) Wednesday against Mayville. VCSU was 30 percent from 3-point range (7-23) and just 42 percent at the free throw line (5-12).
Mayville State shot 40 percent from the field (21-53) and went 13-for-26 in the second half. The Comets finished 0-for-7 from 3-point range but shot 82 percent at the free throw line, making 23 out of 28 attempts.
Jamal Branco was a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line and led Mayville State with 24 points. Chuck Robinson added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Jayden Ferguson knocked down three 3's and finished with 13 points for VCSU. Riley West added 10 points off the bench. Darryl Howell had nine points and three assists, and Justyn Galloway finished with eight points and seven rebounds. LJ Booth had team-highs of eight rebounds and four blocks for the Vikings.
Up next: Valley City State (18-7, 6-3 NSAA) has the weekend off before hosting Dickinson State on Wednesday night. Mayville State (14-8, 4-5 NSAA) travels to Dickinson State for a game this Saturday.
