The Viking volleyball team opened the 2015 season Friday by splitting a pair of matches in Phoenix, Ariz.
VCSU opened with a 3-1 victory over host school Arizona Christian University. In game two, the Viking dropped a 3-0 contest to Benedictine University of Mesa.
VCSU wraps up its tournament in Phoenix with two more matches Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. central time.

The Vikings opened the 2015 season by squeaking out a tight 3-1 victory over the host school, 28-26, 25-19, 27-29, 29-27. VCSU picked up the win despite committing 25 serving errors in the match.
Junior Kanani Auwae and senior Barbara Ector led the attack with 11 kills each. Middle Rachel Hummel added nine kills, had a .600 hitting percentage, had one solo block and five block assists. Clarissa Olson added six kills and Tyler Bulawa had four.
Steph Miller racked up 35 assists and three aces in the victory. Hailie Wilds had four aces and 13 digs, while Emily Plowman added three aces and 11 digs. Jaycee George led the defense with 22 digs.
Benedictine 3, VCSU 0
Match number two on Friday did not go the Vikings way as they lost in three games, 19-25, 21-25, 17-25.
Ector led the team with seven kills and Auwae added six. Seri Geisler chipped in five kills and Clarrisa Olson had five.
Steph Miller had 20 assists and four service aces in the loss. Jaycee George had 19 digs. The Vikings were whistled for nine ball handling errors in the match.
