Five Vikings scored in double figures Saturday afternoon as the Valley City State men's basketball team knocked off Dordt College, the No. 13-ranked team in country.
Valley City State stayed perfect on the season with an 82-76 victory over Dordt during a back-and-forth game in Valley City. The win completed a weekend sweep for VCSU, which also defeated Northwestern College 96-84 in overtime on Friday night.
Valley City State improves to 4-0 overall, while Dordt College drops to 1-2.
Nygel Drury had 17 points and six rebounds to lead five Vikings that scored in double figures. Riley West had 14 points off the bench, including two second-half 3-pointers and four free throws in the final minute.
Justyn Galloway and Nate Vieira had 13 points each, and Galloway added five rebounds and five assists. Darryl Howell added 12 points for VCSU.
Valley City State shot 45 percent from the field (26-58), 35 percent on 3's (7-20) and 64 percent on free throws (23-36).
Dordt College finished at 44 percent overall (28-63), 46 percent from 3-point range (6-13) and 61 percent from the free throw line (14-23). Bryan Sumner scored 15 points lead four Dordt players in double figures.
Saturday's game had nine ties and 11 lead changes. VCSU held a slim 37-36 lead at halftime and outscored Dordt 45-40 in the second half. The teams were tied at 71-71 before a basket from Drury with 3:21 to go put the Vikings ahead for good. VCSU led 73-72 going into the final minute and made six straight free throws to help hold off Dordt down the stretch.
Up next: VCSU (4-0, 1-0 NSAA) will play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA Division I schools over the next 10 days. VCSU plays at Marquette University at 7 p.m. on Monday night. On Nov. 18, VCSU will play at North Dakota State University.
