Viking women win 3rd straight, 63-51

Three Vikings scored in double figures Saturday night as the Valley City State women's basketball team won its third straight game, 63-51 over Dickinson State.

The Vikings led 38-35 at halftime, but clamped down defensively in the second half and allowed just 16 more points to wrap up a 3-game home stand with a third straight victory.

VCSU is now 15-7 overall and 3-1 in the North Star Athletic Association. The Vikings will hit the road Wednesday for a conference game at Mayville State University.

Dickinson State drops to 8-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Dickinson State hosts Presentation College on Wednesday.

A frenetic first half had 14 made 3's as the Vikings came out of the first 20 minutes with a 38-35 lead. Dickinson State made 8 of 15 3-point attempts in the first half to stay close. The Blue Hawks eventually took the lead at 45-44 with 12:53 remaining after a 3-pointer by Hailee Farstveet.

The Vikings had the answer though as Courtney Dixon scored back-to-back baskets to spark an 8-0 run, giving VCSU a 52-45 lead they would not give up the rest of the way. Dixon finished with 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Sierra Even and Georgia Williams both scored 15 points to lead the Viking offense. Even added seven rebounds and four assists. Williams added two assists, two blocks and four steals. Lexi Lennon scored seven points off the bench and point guard Sadiqah Jihad dished out a game-high eight assists in the victory.

VCSU shot 36 percent overall (24-66), 27 percent on 3's (7-26) and 73 percent on free throws (8-11). The Vikings forced 18 Blue Hawk turnovers and had 15 offensive rebounds, which helped lead to 12 more shot attempts than Dickinson.

The Blue Hawks were led by 18 points off the bench from Paitton Herbst, who knocked down four 3's. Hailee Farstveet finished with 12 points and Megan Klein posted a game-high 16 rebounds. Dickinson shot 30 percent from the field (16-54), 46 percent on 3's (10-22) and 90 percent on free throws (9-10).
