The Valley City State University volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday, defeating both Dakota State and Dickinson State at the Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, S.D.
The Vikings improve to 2-6 on the season with the pair of non-conference victories against the North Star Athletic Association opponents. VCSU returns home for its home opener, Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. against Concordia-Moorhead.
VCSU opened the day Saturday with a come-from-behind five-game victory over Dakota State, 22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 15-13. After going down 2-1 after three games, The Vikings rallied to win game four 25-19 and edged out the clinching game five, 15-13.
Alley Theroux had a huge match with 19 kills and a .386 hitting percentage. She was one of three Vikings with double-digit kills. Jodi Wilde had 13 kills and Barbara Ector had 10 kills. Stephanie Miller tallied 33 assists and Jen Wettstein was solid on defense with 24 digs. Emily Plowman led the serving attack with three aces.
In game two Saturday the Vikings made quick work of Dickinson State with 25-15, 26-24, 25-14 sweep.
Ector tallied 11 kills with a .241 hitting percentage. Miller posted 23 assists and Wettstein had 32 digs. Wettstein and Miller each posted three service aces.
The Vikings finished with weekend with a 2-2 record at the Corn Palace Classic. VCSU dropped matches on Friday to both host Dakota Wesleyan (3-0) and Johnson and Wales (3-1).
Up next: VCSU has its home opener Tuesday, Sept. 2 against Concordia-Moorhead. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Graichen Gymnasium.
