Volleyball drops season openers

The Valley City State University volleyball team dropped its season openers this weekend the Morningside Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Vikings opened the weekend on Friday against host team Morningside, falling 25-14, 25-20 and 25-13. Friday night, VCSU took on Central Methodist in a back-and-forth match. Central Methodist won the first game 25-20 before VCSU answered back with a 25-23 win in game two. Methodist won game three 25-19 and then put the match away in game four with a 25-17 victory.

On Saturday, the Vikings played two more matches. VCSU opened the day by dropping a match to Briar Cliff by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-21, and then closed the tournament with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-10 loss to Evangel, which is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll.

It was a strong opening weekend for VCSU senior hitter Alley Theroux, who led the Vikings in kills all four matches. She tallied 42 matches on the weekend, including 14 in the loss to Central Methodist.

Up next: The Vikings (0-4) will look for their first win this weekend when they play in the Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, S.D. VCSU plays Dakota Wesleyan and Johnson and Wales on Friday, and then faces Dakota State and Dickinson State on Saturday.
