The Valley City State University men's basketball team went 0-2 this weekend at the Northwestern Classic, hosted by Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.
VCSU opened the weekend Friday with a 101-76 loss to host Northwestern. On Saturday, the Vikings lost 85-59 to Dordt College.
The Vikings drop to 2-3 this season. They have nine days off before resuming the season Nov. 18 with a 7 p.m. game at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D.
Northwestern 101, VCSU 76
Riley West had 24 points and Jayden Ferguson scored 22 in a losing effort Friday against Northwestern.
VCSU trailed 54-38 at halftime. The Vikings shot 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range. Free throws though were a struggle as the Vikings made just 58 percent (22-38) from the free-throw line.
West was 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers. Ferguson made 7 of 13 shot attempts and was 2-for-4 on 3's.
Mac Kroeplin added 13 points, Quin Peterson had eight points and six rebounds, and Britton Bussman added seven points and five rebounds.
Northwestern shot 54 percent from the field and had five players in double figures, led by 23 points from Nathan Wedel.
Dordt 85, VCSU 59
Dordt College built a 47-27 halftime lead en route to the 85-59 victory over the Vikings.
VCSU shot just 31 percent from the field (19-for-61) and 20 percent on 3's (3-for-15). Briton Bussman led the Viking offense with 15 points, including a 9-for-10 day at the free-throw line. As a team, VCSU improved its free-throw shooting from the night before, going 18-for-22 (82 percent).
Russel Robinson had nine points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Vikings. Paxton Lloyd and Jayden Ferguson each scored six points in the loss.
