Vikings win 7th straight, 63-19 at Mayville

The streak continues on for the No. 17-ranked Viking football team. Valley City State won its seventh straight game Saturday, rolling past Mayville State 63-19 in Mayville.

Kurtis Walls passed for five touchdowns, and Jawuan Pugh scored two defensive touchdowns as the Vikings improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the North Star Athletic Association.

Valley City State is the only undefeated team remaining in conference play. The Vikings have a chance to win the NSAA title outright and lock up an NAIA playoff berth with a victory in their final game, Nov. 8 at Presentation College.

VCSU started fast Saturday, taking the opening kickoff in Mayville and marching 53 yards in four plays, capping off the drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Walls to DeJhon Edwards. Walls threw all five of his touchdowns in the first half as VCSU led 21-0 after the first quarter and 42-7 at halftime.

Walls and Edwards hooked up for two touchdowns on the day. Jake Miller, Demondre Boler and Antoine Griffin each caught a touchdown pass from Walls. Ian Keller and Griffin each rushed for a touchdown.

Jawuan Pugh had himself a huge day on defense for the Vikings. He recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown early in the third quarter, and then returned an interception for another touchdown in the fourth quarter, giving the Vikings a 63-7 lead.

The Vikings finished with 478 yards of total offense while holding Mayville State to just 192 yards. The Viking defense recovered three fumbles and picked off two passes, winning the turnover battle 5-2

Walls finished 18-for-25 for 299 yards and five touchdowns. He threw one interception which was returned for a touchdown for Mayville's only score in the first half. Boler caught eight passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Griffin had five catches fro 95 yards and a score, and Miller caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Edwards finished with three catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Trevor Goerts rushed 16 times for 58 yards, and Keller added 41 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Middle linebacker Nick McBeain led the Viking defense with 15 tackles and a tackle for loss. Harvey McMahon added five tackles and one tackle for loss.

Up next: Valley City State (8-1, 5-0 NSAA) closes out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 8, with a 6 p.m. road game at Presentation College (6-3, 3-2 NSAA).
