Volleyball is No. 4 seed; hosts quarterfinal match Nov. 8

The Valley City State volleyball team will be the No. 4 seed for the upcoming North Star Athletic Association postseason tournament.

The Vikings finished the regular season with a 14-17 overall record and a 4-6 record in conference play. Entering the weekend, the Vikings were still alive in the race for the No. 2 seed, but lost a pair of road matches at Presentation College and Dakota State.

VCSU will host No. 5 seed Dickinson State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 in the NSAA quarterfinals. The Vikings have defeated Dickinson State three times this season. The winner of the match will play in the Nov. 12 semifinals at No. 1 seed University of Jamestown.

Friday: Presentation College 3, VCSU 2
Presentation College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Vikings Friday night in Aberdeen, S.D. VCSU won game one 25-20, lost game two 14-25, and then won game three 25-22 to build a 2-1 lead.

The Saints rallied back with a 25-17 win in game four and a 16-14 win in the decisive game five. It was the Saints' first conference victory this season.

Four different Vikings had double-digit kills, led by 14 from Alley Theroux. Barbara Ector tallied 13 kills, and both Jodi Wilde and Kaitlyn Heuring hit for 11 kills. As a team, the Vikings had a .118 hitting percentage.

Megan Good had 43 assists, and Jen Wettstein racked up 27 digs and five service aces.

Megan Ochsner led the Presentation offense with 19 kills. The Saints hit .186 as a team.

Saturday: Dakota State 3, VCSU 1
Dakota State and VCSU were tied at 1-1 after two games, but the Trojans successfully held home court Saturday as they knocked off the Vikings in four games, 25-11, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Alley Theroux had 14 kills and Kaitlyn Heuring hit 12 kills for the Viking offense. Steph Miller led the way with 34 assists. Rachel Hummel served up three aces and Jen Wettstein dug 24 balls.

The Vikings hit .114 as a team, while Dakota State hit .215.

The Trojans will be the No. 2 seed for the postseason tournament.
